Share Bookmarks with the World

There are so many great things about the internet that it’s nearly impossible to figure out which is the greatest innovation or feature. Many people would argue that the ability to share is the defining feature of the net. Humans build their lives around social interaction — work, school, church, family, community. By enabling people to connect with one another and share everything and anything, the internet has taken socializing to a whole new level.

The ability to share bookmark s was one of the earlier innovations on the web. People were storing their favorite websites and pages on their own computer browsers so that they could find them again. They would email particularly interesting or useful links to friends. Some people even started sharing their “favorites sites” on their personal web pages — long before there were blogs and blogrolls. Eventually sites were created specifically to collect all these favorites into one giant database that could be searched and shared by all.

There are now many different bookmarking sites to choose from. Users register with a login and access the site by password. They can store their links and organize them by categories and tags. They can rate their own bookmarks as well as those submitted by other users. The most popular and highly rated links are usually highlighted by the site, providing an instant indicator of what people are looking at and talking about. Since these sites are indexed by search engines , followed by bloggers and journalists, and even broadcast to social networking sites, it is now literally possible to share a bookmark with the whole world — or at least the entire internet population.
