In Seventeen magazine in August 2004 Courtney Love said the following:
“Being famous is just like being in high school. But I’m not interested in being the cheerleader. I’m not interested in being Gwen Stefani. She’s the cheerleader, and I’m out in the smoker shed. And plenty of you are out there in the smoker shed too. When it comes to rock ‘n’ roll, it’s just like high school.”
Another time Courtney Love said:
“I have nothing against Gwen but when she comes up to me at parties I think, ‘oh here comes the cheerleader’
In NME March 2005 Gwen said in response:
“Y’know someone one time called me a cheerleader, negatively, and I’ve never been a cheerleader. So I was, like, ‘OK, fuck you. You want me to be a cheerleader? Well, I will be one then. And I’ll rule the whole world, just you watch me.’”
A hollaback girl is someone who verbally attacks (hollering back) when they are verbally insulted. So Gwen is basically saying she is going to settle the situation physically instead of being a hollaback girl and throwing verbal insults around.
Tony Kanal also did his own remix of the song which is featured on the Cool single

Written in retaliation after someone called Gwen a cheerleader in an uncomplimentary way, this Neptunes-produced slice of 80s hip-hop pastiche gives the ultimate middle finger to all the haters with its infectious chanting chorus, bouncy rhythm and super-cool American high school video.
THE CAR
The car used in the video was a 1962 Chevrolet Impala Convertible replica and was giving away on KIISFm and then sold on Ebay.
